At first glance it may look like just another smart local inn, but The Montagu Arms is one of Hampshire’s finest & has a Michelin star to boot. Chef Matthew Tomkinson is on top form, delivering a succession of simply executed & gently sauced dishes. A starter of scallops with glazed pork belly, toasted peanuts, pea shoots, apple & radish salad mixes unexpected ingredients to great effect. To follow, perfectly cooked, herb-crusted cod comes with confit tomatoes, mussels & delicate spring onion gnocchi, while roast rump of rose veal with a slow-cooked breast croquette, chard, lentils & carrots is a well-judged mix of textures & flavours. Meals end on a high note with a delectable ensemble of banana soufflé with banana ice-cream & butterscotch sauce. None of this comes cheap, but with all the gorgeous little extras it’s worth every penny. For something more casual, try Monty’s – the in-house pub/bar.
