Square Meal review of Carnarvon Arms:

The Carnarvon Arms is a rambling old coaching inn originally built to accommodate travellers visiting the nearby Highclere Castle. It reopened after a substantial refit in November 2005 as a self-styled ‘fine dining, traditional country inn’ with some dozen smart bedrooms. It was such a success that a further 11 bedrooms were added in 2006. It works well, bridging the gap between restaurant & gastropub by offering a relaxed atmosphere, a mix of classic bar food – ploughman’s, excellent fish & chips, calf’s liver & bacon & homemade burgers – & modern British dishes, all at sensible prices, while the ‘fine dining’ comes courtesy of Michelin-starred chef Robert Clayton (ex-Priory Hotel, Bath). Skill & enthusiasm for quality produce is evident in a starter of Portland crab with fine pasta & lobster sauce, & mains such as sea bass with olive & tomato crushed potatoes, bok choy & basil sauce. The a la carte menu is also served in the smart, modern bar, which offers three real ales & 16 wines by the glass.
