This old coaching house on Pickering's Market Place has sleek, comfortable & contemporary interiors, matched by some excellent food & wine. Eat in the bar or graduate to the dining room, which boasts flagged floors, log fires & well-spaced polished wooden tables, plus a menu positively bursting with seasonal Yorkshire produce. Fish comes from Whitby, game from the North York Moors, & meat from farmer Tim Wilson (of Ginger Pig fame). Try some Swaledale lamb, Tamworth rare-breed pork, char-grilled rib-eye of organic Longhorn beef or even bangers & mash with onion gravy. Posh fish & chips with mushy peas & tartare sauce is also well worth ordering, while desserts promise the likes of rich chocolate cake with boozy cherries & local clotted cream. Also make sure you leave room for a plate of Yorkshire farmhouse cheeses.
