Square Meal review of George:
Housed in a listed building, George's bar & 70-seat restaurant offer total seclusion from Esher High Street. The bar is a grown-up, classy affair, with a drinks list that changes according to seasonal produce, some with an engaging twist on the classics – Pomegranate Cosmopolitan, Rhubarb & Honey Bellini, or our favourite, the Fig Sour with vanilla-infused Wyborowa vodka. Like the bar, the restaurant takes things seriously. The service is formal, which can make things appear a tad stuffy, & the modern European menu is eager to impress. However, wild mushroom ravioli lacked flavour – better were accompaniments of baby leeks, beetroot & light garlic sauce – & the flavours of pan-fried monkfish with braised oxtail rather cancelled each other out. Even desserts were lacking in execution, with a peach tart teamed with a tasteless black pepper ice-cream. On the upside, effort has gone into putting together an excellent wine list. This is an upmarket area bereft of any upscale restaurants, & this newcomer tries hard to fill the gap - perhaps too hard.
