The design-led regeneration of old industrial Holbeck is fast turning a no-go area south of the river into a promising foodie haven & the latest opening adds a wine bar/brasserie to the portfolio. Ex-Leodis manager Phil Richardson & Shaun Davies deploy old brick, ceramic floor tiles, a wood-panelled bar, bentwood chairs & subdued lighting to make this more friendly-retro than cool-millennial Leeds, but its simple menu of mainly British & European dishes are pleasing if at times nervously under-seasoned. Country pate, steamed mussels, grilled shrimps for starters & grilled rib-eye with green peppercorn sauce to follow or loin of lamb with garlic cream sauce, pheasant with bread sauce, calf’s liver with bacon & onions set the tone, resoundingly confirmed at pudding by those ‘80s favourites: treacle tart, brandy snaps & cream, & banoffee pie.
