The White Vine House

Looking smart in the middle of the bustling High Street, this recently restored restaurant with rooms is something of an architectural gem. A Georgian facade hides a house of medieval origins & striking Elizabethan features. Decor is understated – a white dining room of Georgian proportions & another with fine 16th-century panelling, both offset by crisp white linen & high, leather-backed dining chairs. The kitchen places emphasis on local produce & the evening menu is good value, offering grilled mackerel with mustard sauce, say, ahead of lamb shank with mashed potatoes. Lunch sees lighter dishes such as hand-raised pork pie or rare roast beef served with coleslaw, potato salad & piccalilli. Service is positively charming & the atmosphere buzzing.
