Square Meal review of Shapes:
This restaurant has been open since the end of 2001 but its unfashionable location doesn't equate with fine dining; most of Edinburgh is yet ignorant of its existence. This is a pity since Shapes is, simply, a brilliant place to eat. It may look like nothing more than a green shed of a motorway diner, but inside the decor is an eclectic riot of expensive fixtures & fittings that shouldn't work but somehow does, stopping cleverly short of overkill. Meanwhile, the food is equal to the setting. A full lunch might bring rocket & feta salad with pear, pine nuts, & pickled ginger to start, perfect roast hake with pesto crust & red pepper risotto as a main, spiced apple & sultana creme brulee for dessert. Lighter options include hot sandwiches & salads, the wine list of around 60 has a fair choice at £20 or under, & service is right on the button. Anyone can lunch (Mon-Sat), but it’s members only for dinner (Fri-Sat). Anomalous location aside, the standard of cooking takes Shapes way beyond novelty value.
