The sandwich board outside this simple hamlet pub five miles north of Whitby often reads: ‘Sorry we’re full, but come back, everything is fabulous’. And, once you’ve booked ahead, come back you should, for everything is indeed fabulous, from ham hock terrine or pea & mint risotto to turbot with porcini-flavoured potatoes or steak & chips with garlic butter. The menu sticks to half a dozen starters & mains, with just the one daily-changing pudding, such as pear & almond tart or chocolate terrine. Chef Jason Davies took over the kitchen in 2005 after cooking in London gastropubs, & with his wife Sue has produced an absolute gem. Cosy up in the tiny dining room in winter or eat out in summer in a garden with long-distance coastal views to Whitby.
