There’s real theatrical panache behind the opulent interior of this grand Palladian villa. The calming basement dining room – all candles, small windows, muted shades & intimate conversation – is a great venue for Vanessa Scott’s cooking & her dedication to local, fresh & seasonal ingredients sings out. From a short, focused daily changing menu (so it's suited to both weather & time of year) you might have brown shrimp, sheep cheese, sweet cucumber & avocado salad, then Cley-smoked haddock on its own fish cake with spicy sauce, a taster of British & local cheeses, with a poppy seed & boozy sultana cheesecake to finish. Les Scott is a natural host, handling front of house with aplomb. Total commitment to environmental good practice is the driving force here, green credentials are second to none. Luxurious bedrooms & excellent breakfasts, too.
