Square Meal review of Channings:
Channings is one of Edinburgh’s better hotels, part of the Town House Company which also operates the Bonham & the Howard. For a few years it had a dual-track food policy with a Mediterranean bistro in its basement & a fine dining restaurant. The latter had a deserved reputation for elevated cooking thanks to chef Hubert Lamort. He is still there, but the fine dining (and Mediterranean bistro) gave way to a single, all-encompassing space in 2005. A typical three course dinner might now involve moules mariniere to start; then a good pan-fried fillet of sea bream with olive oil mash & salsa verde; plum bread & butter pudding for dessert. There is a bargain weekend lunch, the Boozy Snoozy, that offers a three course meal for four people, plus two bottles of wine, for just £60 – all good fun. It’s a pity that Channings no longer aspires to previous heights, but that doesn’t detract from what is now a decent, discreet & modern brasserie.
