Square Meal review of Tonic:
When you walk into a style bar boasting a cocktail list of 13 pages, but a wine list of just six bottles (seven if you count the token rose), you might be forgiven for thinking, 'Decent food? Here? Yeah, right.' Tonic strives to be an exception to the rule however. This small, modish basement has been around since 2000 and serving meals since 2003, thanks to its partnership with a catering firm called The Devil's Kitchen. The result is a very nice line in one dish meals like toasted focaccia, salads, pasta, chargrilled burgers and a few more elaborate efforts besides. This means that a full three courses is also possible: soup, bruschetta or stuffed mushrooms to start, moving on to something like a decent, chunky bouillabaisse, finishing with strawberries and cream perhaps. Due warning: the menus are put away as the night gets more jolly. Although Tonic is ideal for lunch, languid afternoon eats, or even a quick meal after work on occasion, it's not your traditional dinner destination. Decent nosh all the same.
