Half bistro, half food shop, the Markwicks’ Culinaria is hidden in a tiny parade of shops & characterised by bentwood tables & chairs & bookshelves packed with culinary tomes, & display freezers filled with Stephen Markwick’s top quality dishes to take home for supper. A short menu touts Provençale fish soup or lamb’s sweetbreads and tongue salad with tarragon dressing, followed perhaps by the robust venison, mallard and pigeon pie, or loin of pork with prunes, artichoke and pommes Anna. Then it’s a tough choice between lemon and almond polenta cake with rosemary syrup and crème fraîch or baked lime and ginger cheesecake. A generously priced wine list means there’s something for most tastes & pockets. There's no doubt the UK needs more restaurants like this, delivering best-quality ingredients, lovingly prepared & served in a comfortable environment.
