A short drive from the centre of Cardiff and a world apart, St Fagan's village is posh and pretty but despite the chintzy images its name might conjure, The Old Post Office is an uncluttered affair, stylish and calming in delicious whites and creams. The chef clearly knows the classics, and the concise, characterful wine list is the perfect foil for his assured cooking. A meal might include crab and lemongrass bisque or twice baked goats' cheese souffle with a pesto dressing followed by the likes of oven baked chump of Welsh lamb with a potato rosti, parsnip and carrot puree and rosemary jus or braised shin of beef with caramelized foie gras and seasonal root vegetables and truffle jus. For food and service of this standard, lunch is a steal at £12.50 for two courses or £15.95 for three.
