The Pot Kiln may look like an old pub that has seen better days, but don’t be put off. The run down appearance is deliberate, hiding a cracking place that takes its food, wine & beer seriously: not many pubs can boast that the landlord shot the deer offered on the menu, or deliver a wine list that gets its teeth into most regions & offers fair pricing & outstanding quality. The cooking style is bang on: modern, light & powerfully flavoured, with dishes such as potted game, fish pie, or a Sunday roast unencumbered by fussy presentation. A richly sweet flavoured ragu (served with tagliatelle) is slow cooked for 24 hours, while the seared wood pigeon & black pudding salad is a gutsy, rustic offering that is rapidly becoming something of a signature dish. Desserts maintain momentum with a lemon tart as ‘gloriously sharp’ as the menu promises & the Valrhona chocolate fondant everything it should be. This is a genuine rural local where country pursuits are championed & local producers supported, & the tiny, bare bar is a great place for a gossip over a pint of Brick Kiln.
