Square Meal review of Sugar Hut Village:

Nicer than outsiders to Essex might expect, this Brentwood sibling of Fulham’s Sugar Hut dispenses with the need to head up west for a glamorous night out. The setting, a 15th-century former pub, might seem incongruous for a posh Thai, but works surprisingly well, with a sunny courtyard that’s the perfect place for sipping Asian-inspired cocktails and more drinking space in the rich-hued bar inside. The large dining room, meanwhile, has been cleverly arranged to feel intimate and is lit by beautiful chandeliers, while upstairs there’s a pretty nightclub. The long menu is split into appetisers, soups, salads, meat, fish and poultry; a set menu is on hand if you can’t be bothered to choose, but it’s worth giving the a la carte your full attention. Deep-fried prawns tasted fresh and succulent and came with a toothsome plum sauce, while spiced duck confit in tamarind sauce was a pleasingly well-prepared spin on crispy duck. If you’re concentrating on the cocktails, a platter of juicy dumplings, tangy fishcakes and popcorn-sweet puffed rice vermicelli makes a nice accompaniment to the strong drinks.
