Some of the best contemporary tapas this side of Barcelona can be found in a shopping parade on the Kent coast, so booking is essential at this unlicensed kitchen & dining room, despite a recent refurbishment that has increased the seating. Nikki Billington honed her skills at the Whitstable Oyster Fishery, but has spent the past few years in the Mediterranean, particularly Greece. Keen to open her own restaurant on her return, she converted the ground floor of her Victorian house and has barely had time to draw breath since. Partner Paul Watson handles front of house, while a deceptively simple menu of Mediterranean classics wows with impeccable sourcing & craftsmanship. Begin with cold plates of Tuscan salami or wafer-thin slices of lonzino (pork) & progress to calamari frito – skilled timing transforming an often pedestrian dish into something extraordinary. Move on to tender slices of cannon of lamb zinging with fresh mint & tzatziki, delicate haddock goujons, grilled sardines, Greek goats’ cheese with candied pear, dolmades, hoummos, patatas bravas… & so it goes on. Corkage of just £1 a bottle adds to the feel-good factor.
