Square Meal review of Penhelig Arms:
Overlooking Cardigan Bay, in the beautiful seaside village of Aberdyfi, the 18th-century Penhelig Arms has a low-ceilinged, homely feel backed up by local, simply prepared food. Native lamb is among the best in Britain, while the fish menu depends on what the boats bring in that morning. There's a modish, pale blue & grey restaurant, though the Fisherman's Bar makes just as good a pit-stop & you can take your food out to the sea wall on good summer days. Fish & chips - fillets of haddock crisp fried in a light batter & served with peas, tartare sauce & fries – is a meal in itself, otherwise feast on the likes of fillets of mullet grilled chilli & mint, spring onion & chicory salad or whole local mackerel grilled with cherry tomatoes & balsamic to start & then enjoy whole black sea bream roasted with Mediterranean vegetables & spices or cod stew with king prawns, peppers, potatoes & peas. The 270-bin wine list – an indulgence of owner Robert Hughes – remains a big attraction, & with mark-ups your average merchant would struggle to match, it's a great chance to drink around.
