The cavernous, mirrored San Carlo claims to be a ‘proper Italian restaurant’. Quite what that implies may be debatable, but there’s no doubt that San Carlo, part of a mini-chain with other branches in Bristol, Leicester & Birmingham, has been a big, buzzing, bustling success ever since it opened its doors in July 2004. The emphasis is on fish, with a fine array from lobster thermidor to monkfish & king prawn kebab. There is also a wide choice of retro Italian antipasti, pastas & pizzas, the latter from a wood-burning oven in the open kitchen.
