Set in its own 67-acre estate overlooking lake Windermere, the ambition of this old white-painted house, built on a family rather than palatial scale, is signalled by its striking modern interior. The cooking, too, is contemporary in style & built on a solid foundation of quality ingredients. A starter of sweet cured ham & parsley ballottine with piccalilli & Mrs Kirkham's cheddar cheese souffle might be followed by fillet of brill with creamed potatoes, celeriac puree, braised rib, foie gras and clams, or roast loin of venison with confit potatoes, chorizo Iberico, shallots and watercress, & roasted fig, warm fig turnover, oat tuile and goats' cheese ice-cream for dessert.
