Carlton Riverside

Alan & Mary Ann Gilchrist’s acclaimed Carlton House closed in November 2006 & moved to new premises 300 yards away. Their new operation, Carlton Riverside, has not lost the valued personal touch, but offers a more spacious restaurant overlooking the river Irfon, & up-to-date comfortable bedrooms. With Mary Ann still firmly ensconced in the kitchen, the formula of a short choice, daily changing menu built around seasonal local produce remains the same. Dishes may not be cutting edge, but who cares when there’s warm salad of seared scallops with lime & coriander dressing & crisped Carmarthen ham, followed by roast fillet of beef topped with seared foie gras & served with parsnip, celeriac & potato mash, savoy cabbage & a morel & Madeira sauce. Round it all off with Welsh cheeses, or a warm chocolate fondant with oranges in caramel & Grand Marnier, not forgetting to dip in to the small but selective wine list.
