Alan & Mary Ann Gilchrist’s Carlton Riverside comes with a highly valued personal touch, comfortable bedrooms & a spacious restaurant overlooking the river Irfon. With Mary Ann still firmly ensconced in the kitchen, the formula of a limited choice, daily changing menu built around seasonal & local produce remains the same. Dishes may not be cutting edge, but who cares when there’s twice-baked soufflé suissesse, followed by char-grilled fillet of beef topped with black olive tapenade & crispy capers or rack of Irfon Valley lamb with caramelised oranges & savoyarde potatoes. Round it all off with Welsh cheeses or carpaccio of fresh pineapple with spiced rum syrup & homemade vanilla ice – not forgetting to dip into the small but selective wine list.
