You wouldn’t expect such a modern twist on food in this beautifully looked-after old farmhouse, now a popular pub & restaurant, but that’s exactly what you’ll get. Expect well-executed dishes that make use of top-notch ingredients: grilled squid with chilli, lime & parsley, watercress & chicory followed by breaded cutlets of salt-marsh lamb with orange & mint couscous & spiced aubergine, then blood orange jelly with spiced chocolate orange caramel & chocolate ice-cream for afters. If all that leaves you wanting to make a weekend of it then pick from eight bedrooms where hi-tech gadgetry (Bang & Olufsen TVs, no less) provide the perfect apres-dinner relaxation. You can even work up an appetite by visiting Lacock Abbey, just up the road, or Avebury & Silbury Hill close by, while Stonehenge is an impressive drive across Salisbury Plain.
