Square Meal review of Cotswold House Hotel:

Dominating the high street of the improbably picturesque village of Chipping Campden, the imposing Regency exterior of the Cotswold House Hotel gives way to a modern & bright interior. Certainly no expense has been spared. Juliana’s is the main restaurant – three stunning floor to ceiling French windows overlooking very pretty gardens at one end with some modern wood cladding & ‘startlingly clashing’ paintings on the other walls. The menu reads well, with ingredient combinations that make perfect sense – pressed ham hock & foie gras with beetroot carpaccio, cider apples & toasted brioche, for example, or roast loin of venison with celeriac puree, wild mushroom mousse & Belgian endive marmaletta – dishes that imply a grasp of what works with what. In the same building, Hicks Brasserie is a self-consciously different style of operation, the menu offering a quick whirl through vaguely bistro-ish dishes: egg Benedict with Parma ham & hollandaise; Hicks Caesar salad, which strays from the original with both poached chicken & bacon; calves’ liver with bacon, parsley mash & caramelised onion jus; & salmon fishcake, served with a rather obscure sauce bois boudrain. Staff are cheerful & pleasant, & the atmosphere is more comfortable than in the more formal Juliana’s, although the lovely 16th-century room overlooking the street sports a colour scheme & artworks ‘at odds with the age of the building’.
