Livebait hooked this place shortly after rival national chain Fish! had sunk without trace just across the city. Leeds preferred its lower prices, greater sociability and lack of pretension. And as an entry-level marine-cuisine bar-diner, it remains admirable. Service may be a little laid-back, but cooking is sound and prices don’t hurt. In the open-plan kitchen, the chef sears scallops, batters haddock, fries sardines, steams mussels, char-grills tuna, bakes cod and assembles hot seafood platters.
