Square Meal Review of Quince and Medlar ?

An innovative vegetarian restaurant in a small town on the western outskirts of the Lake District is quite a find. Yet Colin & Louisa Le Voi have owned the homely Quince & Medlar for more than two decades, & are much fêted by the guidebooks. Their take on meat-free cooking yields some unusual & interesting combos – spinach, cream cheese & Wensleydale gâteau with sweet potato & Dijon mustard sauce, for example. Starters might include fennel & shallot tart with feta & olives or sticky lemongrass rice wrapped in nori seaweed & served chilled with tamari & avocado, & there could be passion fruit tart for dessert. The menu changes every six to eight weeks, & the drinks list includes an admirable range of organic wines & beers.

The Quince and Medlar has a lovely friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Light classical music played quietly in the background lends a calm and intimate feel to the restaurant. Having been met at the door, drinks and canapes are served in a small drawing room whilst one chooses from the imaginative and mouthwatering menu. The food is presented beautifully and tastes delicious. I had poached pear stuffed with capers and served with pickled walnuts to start, great flavour combinations, followed by Lebanese pancakes, so light and fluffy. Homemade bread and many interestingly prepared seasonal vegetables (e.g. carrots with sesame) accompany each meal. Make sure you leave room for a pud as they too are delicious, honey cheesecake being voted “best ever cheesecake” by my friend (and she should know!). The service is impeccable – not too fussy but attentive. Definitely not just for veggies, but wonderful “occassion” dining at a very reasonable price. I'm recommending to all my friends!
