There is admirable attention to detail in every aspect of the operation at this stunningly converted 16th century pub, from the fine ales & interesting range of wines on offer at the bar to the food served in the simply elegant dining room. Daily changing menus are speckled with carefully sourced ingredients that are put to imaginative use: ham hock & foie gras terrine with house sweet piccalilli, say, served ahead of a trio of Blythburgh free-range pork teamed with an apple tart tatin & sage & onion jus, with lemon tart with marmalade ice-cream for afters. This all-out gem is well worth the drive from London, but ask for tips on local accommodation (Hanbury Manor is a cab ride away).
