If you fancy heading off the beaten track, you can’t get much more remote than the Applecross Inn on the west coast of Scotland. The drive over the highest mountain pass in the UK delivers some jaw-droppingly beautiful views – especially the one over Applecross Bay & out to the Isle of Skye. It’s a deceptively simple-looking whitewashed pub, but the outstanding cooking, courtesy of the appropriately name owner, Judith Fish, & her team, makes it all worthwhile. Tuck in to king scallops with garlic & crispy bacon, or haddock & chips. Freshly dressed Applecross Bay crab or Applecross Bay prawns pan-fried in lemon-garlic butter make a delicious, simple alternative and, this being a pub, you won't break the bank by washing it all down with something refreshing from the wine list. Outside tables make the best of the view in the lovely shoreside garden, and there are a handful of higgledy-piggledy bedrooms for those wanting to stay over.
