Superlative Regency country house surrounded by landscaped gardens, yet just five minutes walk from the centre of Ambleside. It’s noted for generous, well-developed Anglo-French dishes on its four-course evening sets: for instance, sauteed kidneys with mushrooms, onions & Madeira sauce, a soup or sorbet, then salmon on a creamy prawn risotto, with lemon tart to finish. The light set lunch (£8.70) is particularly good value, & there's an impressive wine list & service that is attentive but relaxed. Afternoon tea is famous, too. Served from 3.30-5.30pm, it defies you even to consider having dinner afterwards: a help-yourself buffet of quiches, pork pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches, profiteroles, tiramisu, Victoria sponge, tea breads, scones, jam, lemon curd & cream, washed down with a wide selection of properly served loose-leaf teas. It’s astonishing value at just £10 & must be booked in advance.
