Stockbridge is the country’s fly-fishing capital, so The Greyhound seems an unlikely name for a one-time 15th-century coaching inn set on its main street. It’s no dusty old country local either, but sports an unbuttoned (yet cosmopolitan) restaurant of pedigree draped in pub clothing & serving up modern dishes inspired by prime seasonal produce. Expect offerings such as fresh sage linguine with roasted butternut squash, pine nuts & parmesan or, perhaps, pan-fried halibut with bubble & squeak, wild mushrooms & smoked bacon vinaigrette. Out back is a little garden overlooking the winding, clear-running chalk waters of the river Test. Eight swish bedrooms, too.
