Just down the road from well-heeled Southwell, the Waggon & Horses justifies its reputation as one of the best gastropubs in Nottinghamshire. Dating from the mid-18th century, it’s a traditional village pub – all timbered beams & green wellies. The menu lists simple, well-considered dishes such as starters of pan-fried pigeon breast with quince & onion marmalade, or smoked goose breast with pear & walnut salad, proceeding to mains like glazed duck breast, roast beetroot & onions, or buttered roast fennel & mushroom risotto. Leave room for dessert as the gin & tonic sorbet is not to be missed. Generous portions & cheery service are added bonuses.
