Close to Southwell & its racecourse, this refurbished gastropub is a good bet & locals have taken enthusiastically to its contemporary interiors & modern British menu. Produce is sourced locally where possible & dishes range from starters of organic cauliflower soup & blue cheese cream, or smooth chicken liver & foie gras pate, to honey-roast Gressingham duck, & rack of Derbyshire lamb for mains. Among desserts, the apricot & almond cake is hard to resist, but try a mug of hot chocolate, marshmallows & chocolate biscuit cake if you are looking for a real sugar hit. Service is impressively slick, even on busy weekends, & the wine list is impressive.
