Just two miles outside the ancient cathedral city of Winchester, Lainston House is a charming 17th-century William & Mary house set in 63 acres of Hampshire countryside. Serried ranks of ancient lime trees line the drive leading up to the Avenue Restaurant, which also benefits from great views of the unique arboreal show. Chef Andy Mackenzie has been with Lainston for almost 25 years, & he makes the most of home-grown produce, estate-reared Gloucester Old Spot pigs & supplies from the region. The result is an eclectic menu that might deliver seared scallops with crispy bacon, Hampshire watercress & vine tomato, saddle of organic lamb with asparagus & salsa verde, & seasonal desserts such as garden elderflower pannacotta with glazed cherries & mint syrup. Spot-on service complements the formal ambience & accomplished food, while everything on the extensive wine list is available by the glass.
