Square Meal Review of The Avenue at Lainston House Hotel ?

Just two miles outside the ancient cathedral city of Winchester, Lainston House is a charming 17th-century William & Mary house set in 63 acres of Hampshire countryside. Serried ranks of ancient lime trees line the drive leading up to the Avenue Restaurant, which also benefits from great views of the unique arboreal show. Chef Andy Mackenzie has been with Lainston for almost 25 years, & he makes the most of home-grown produce, estate-reared Gloucester Old Spot pigs & supplies from the region. The result is an eclectic menu that might deliver seared scallops with crispy bacon, Hampshire watercress & vine tomato, saddle of organic lamb with asparagus & salsa verde, & seasonal desserts such as garden elderflower pannacotta with glazed cherries & mint syrup. Spot-on service complements the formal ambience & accomplished food, while everything on the extensive wine list is available by the glass.

Stepping back a few centuries often means a formal less relaxed experience. Nevertheless on arrival a good-looking building was a pleasure to behold and gorgeous gardens were enhanced by sun on bank holiday Monday.
Even if the chef has had a strong foothold for almost quarter of a century, cooking is an obvious vocation of which he will perhaps never tire. He came up with a mix of accomplished classics, some made interestingly modern without a puff of foam in sight, which pleased our group, except for one under-seasoned starter. He did wonders with beetroot, featuring differently 3 times, and pork was the unanimously gratifying choice for main.
Though service was blunder free, the staff on duty that day seemed a trifle inexperienced.
Generally enjoyable, so we’d all return, especially for a bit of ‘Old Spot’ and a peek at the grounds.
