Square Meal review of Bybrook Restaurant:

A winding drive separates the imposing Manor House Hotel from the tourist-run village of Castle Combe and, once inside, it does feel as if the rest of humanity is half a world away. There’s nothing like a bit of peace and seclusion to help you relax – especially with first-rate leisure and spa facilities (including an 18-hole golf course) on hand – and it’s small wonder that this is a popular conference and wedding venue. Inside we found a swathe of traditionally furnished public rooms – leather Chesterfields, log fires crackling away (much appreciated on a chilly day) – and the Bybrook Restaurant, which was formal and proper with beautiful chandeliers, immaculate table linen and sparkling glasses. The food may not be state-of-the-art trendy, but in these surroundings one could hardly expect it to be; instead, mainstream country house cooking is offered, incorporating the odd contemporary flourish. A lot of work undoubtedly goes into producing dishes such as baked sardines with lemon and garlic, wrapped in Parma ham and served with smoked almond pesto; five-pepper crusted duck supreme with vanilla pommes puree and honey-roasted nectarine; and baby chicken poached in cumin-scented coriander broth with baby carrots and a sweet pepper compote. Desserts are well crafted, too, exemplified by banana creme brulee with dark chocolate and caramelised walnut mousse.
