A listed Georgian front hides contemporary contents at this popular, centrally located address, where both cooking & decor are ambitious & modern. Start with drinks in the basement bistro-bar (worth noting for snacks of posh sandwiches & salads as well as more substantial offerings) before heading back up to the cool dining room & tucking into the likes of Golden Cross cheese with beetroot salad, & roast rump of Kendal Rough Fell lamb with truffle macaroni, creamed cabbage & marjoram jus. Bread & butter pudding with vanilla ice cream is the sort of dessert to expect, although the cheeseboard (with fruit cake) is an enticing alternative. Good value lunch & pre-theatre sets come in at £13.95 for two, £16.95 for three courses.
