Square Meal Review of The Rainbow Inn ?

A steady stream of visitors & locals wend their way to this archetypal English country pub not too far from East Grinstead, drawn by its off-the-beaten-track location, rustic simplicity & locally sourced food. Light, bright colours add some zing to the interior, while the pretty garden may beckon on fine days. The regularly changing, chalked-up menu could point you in the direction of scallops on a saffron pilaf with pea purée or Stilton & walnut tart with port mayonnaise before chicken & leek pie, venison sausages & mash or local pheasant with bubble & squeak. The noteworthy cheeseboard runs to a baker’s dozen, while the sweet-toothed might veer towards the likes of raspberry tart or bread & butter pudding. A staunch wine list & pleasing service are also worth a mention.

We went as a family of 6 with two children. We asked if we could order a children's roast chicken and were told yes of course. When the meals came out there was no dinner for my daughter. Finally a roast beef dinner appeared. We pointed out we had asked for chicken, were told they didn't offer that meal but would bring out the trimmings and bring half a chicken breast ASAP. Nothing appeared. We asked again. We got a grumpy response from the waitress. Dinner finally appeared when everyone else had finished their main course. We asked for the bill. It appeared unbelievably quickly, nothing else had, with a service charge added. My husband took the bill to the manager who did apologise and remove the charge. When we went to leave the restaurant the staff either looked away or gave us a dirty look (two waitresses). Talk about walk of shame. We, like some of the other reviewers, will not be back.

After years of average ho-hum gastropubbery, this place has recently taken off. The new, young kitchen team are producing exceptional, inventive dishes from locally sourced ingredients and the serving staff, under the expert direction of the Manager, Ed, are attentive and knowledgeable. The wine list is a marvel, both in scope and layout, and the two local brews are kept and served in tip-top condition. A renaissance indeed!

The pub looked pretty, it was a warm day and I was thirsty so my girlfriend and I called in for a drink last week. We left 3 hours later having had a delicious lunch! The bar and restaurant are really nicely designed – a sort of mix between contemporary chic and country farmhouse, sounds incongruous but it works, and there is a great terrace/sun trap at the back. We were welcomed by the manager Ed who looked after us really well. The food was great and at £15 for a set price 3 course lunch it was very good value. I hate food served on slates and wooden chopping boards, which they seem to do quite a lot, but other than this gripe I rated my experience in this pub as first class. The Dark Star ‘Hophead’ bitter was a revelation. Next time I'm in the area I will certainly return, it is now added to my other favourites in that area The Griffin and Jolly Sportsman.

My family have been here several times before, its not the best but ok. We visited one sunday lunch time recently and the place was busy. The staff (two men) were harrassed there as a party in the back room with young children and their family. My husband, daughter, son & I ,felt uncomfortable they quite clearly didn't like children. The food was poor chewy meat , frozen sweetcorn for veg. The scallop well couldn't eat them. We heard the waiter complaining to some regular customers about having children in there. Four main courses ,bottle of water over seventy pounds. WILL NEVER GO AGAIN. . .

Having been a faithful customer for a number of years I chose this restaurant for the previously good food and service. Unfortunately, it was a complete let down. Food was poor and the Management did nothing to improve the situation. A written complaint was never dealt with. Unable to recommend this restaurant in any way.
