As charming locations go, the Royal Crescent Hotel’s central position in this celebrated slice of Georgian architecture takes some beating. The surroundings are a big draw, but the Dower House, set in the garden, is also worth seeking out for its impressive food. Freshness & seasonality point up the kitchen’s modern British take on dishes such as carpaccio of belly pork with pickled kohlrabi, smoked eel, horseradish & vodka cream, or loin of rose veal served with a red onion tarte tatin, spinach purée & cider apple. None this comes cheap (wines are pricey, too), but given the standard of cooking & the must-visit setting, you’re unlikely to feel robbed.
