Chef David McLaughlin serves British cuisine with a French inflection at this unpretentious nineteenth-century country house. Eat in the panelled dining room or, in fine weather, take lunch or an early dinner on the modern terrace with views over Lake Windermere to the Old Man of Coniston & the Langdale Pikes. Top quality ingredients demonstrate impeccable sourcing, while the flavours are juggled with assurance while resisting over-richness Recommend are salt cod panna cotta with pickled vegetables & salmon beignets, followed by roast squab pigeon with confit cabbage & Madeira sauce; a vanilla cheesecake with rhubarb sorbet is the pudding of choice, but English & French cheeses are a strong point, too & the wine list is superb. Weddings & dinner parties are popular throughout the year.
