Square Meal review of The Alma:
This gastropub is a boon to an area which has a dearth of good pubs & restaurants. The cosy bar offers a nicely put-together menu that ranges from ciabattas to more substantial fare such as pot-roasted pheasant with herb dumplings. But better still is the contemporary dining room at the back, which serves decently done modern European cooking. Kick off with a tropical starter of brochette of marlin with mango & avocado salad, or an equally winning salad of endive with cashel blue cheese & toasted walnuts. Mains include the likes of fillet of sea bass with spaghetti vegetables, pesto & tomato dressing & honey & garlic pork fillet with gratin potato & bramley apple stuffed with dates & cinnamon. Puddings win on presentation, but not on lightness. The Alma attracts a predominantly local crowd but if you’re in the area it’s well worth a look.
