Old Coastguard Hotel

Views across the garden & out over Mounts Bay are part of the appeal at this relaxed & very popular hotel. The terrace comes into its own on hot summer days when the daytime bistro menu does a roaring trade in crab sandwiches & afternoon cream teas. The cool & modern split-level room, with its pale wood floors, smart chocolate, leather dining chairs, modern lighting & some rather good contemporary art, sits comfortably with the straightforward culinary approach. The fish is delivered from Newlyn just down the road – though the kitchen is not totally reliant on fish & seafood. While dinner could bring excellent lobster ravioli, served alongside spiced guacamole & a zingy tomato & tarragon consomme, & roast wild sea bass with beetroot, tomato fondue & salsa verde, there is also breast of wood pigeon served with a salad of crispy bacon & duck with confit cabbage & sarladaise potatoes. A trio of strawberry desserts is a refreshing way to finish.
