Square Meal Review of The Maltsters Arms ?

Perfect for a post-golf pit stop, this traditional village pub lies just minutes from Rock and Polzeath, going back towards the A39. The popular dining room serves a daily-changing selection of fresh, often Med-ish, dishes with an obvious emphasis on local fish, seafood and locally farmed meats, whilst the cosy bar offers quality snacks (grilled sardines served with mixed salad leaves and a balsamic oil dressing) and sandwiches (Davidstow cheddar with a red onion and chilli chutney), and pints of locally brewed Maltsters Special.

My daughters took me to The Malsters Arms for Mothers Day lunch this year. We have since agreed it was the perfect place for perfect mums and enjoyable in every way. I had not eaten here before although both my daughters had.
The setting is picturesque, the food, drink and service all to a very good standard. We were welcomed warmly and treated well by all the attentive staff thoughout our visit I chose the Sunday carvery which was just too delicious and my daughters had the vegetarian options. My only regret was that they had both left room for fantastic deserts and I had not. I was actually quite peeved when their gorgeous sweets arrived, as I had no space for even the skinniest wafer thin mint ! Although it was very busy, the atmosphere was still peaceful and everyone seemed happy. It was a perfect treat for myself and lovely daughters. On leaving , Mums were presented with a lovely little potted primula each to take home – planted in the garden it is a sweet reminder.

It is not always easy to recommend a good place to eat in this part of North Cornwall but I am recommending The Malsters Arms to my B+B guests this year. I have also booked a table for my partners birthday treat and look forward to many more special treats there myself.

    February 2010

A party of four of us ate at the Maltsters Arms on the 13th February and opted for the Valentine's menu.

North Cornwall is not blessed with a plethera of decent pubs you can afford to eat in, so we are not spoilt for options.

We had read up on the pub and so booked in advance. We have a small holiday cottage in St Minver and have struggled to find anywhere decent to eat apart from the usual Rick Stein's or 15 at Watergate Bay which we cannot afford on every visit.

We were not expecting anything exceptional from the Maltsters and would have been content with an adequate night out.

We were in for a shock!

The greeting at the door was warm and friendly with a good selection of beers and wines served my smiling faces. We were shown to our table and given adequate time to order without feeling rushed or frustrated.

The party opted for the £30 per head, four course selection. Across the four of us we covered much of the menu and without exception, the food was excellent (easily up to the celebrity restaurants) as was the options available. We had a great evening and are eager to go again. I feel sure the usual menu would be as good and we look forward to testing this out.

We will be making the Maltsters a regular night out if our early impressions are anything to go by.
