New owner Alan O’Kane (ex-Angel Inn, Corbridge) has found his niche in this well regarded restaurant close to Long Sands beach. Honest cooking blends modern & traditional ideas that are unbeatable for variety & imagination. Fish comes straight from the boats: tempura hake with a sweet chilli sauce makes a good way to start, followed perhaps by halibut with pancetta & wild mushrooms. Meatier treats include starters such as grilled chicken with mango & cherry tomato salad & spicy coconut dressing ahead of lamb rump with Mediterranean vegetables & sauteed kidneys. Raw materials are top class, while a light touch with desserts can be seen in strawberry fool with shortbread biscuits. The chic split-level dining room mixes sleek minimalist furniture with cream, beige & aubergine to great effect, while art exhibitions add interest.
