Square Meal Review of Chequers Brasserie ?

With beams, log fires & an inviting atmosphere, this historic 17th-century inn-cum-hotel in the depths of the Thames Valley serves lunch & dinner in an adaptable dining room – bright & fresh for daytime, candlelit for romantic evening meals. The classic gastropub menu is speckled with local produce & changes according to market availability. Game terrine, curried parsnip soup & crispy duck Caesar salad jostle for position among the starters, while mains cast their net wide for the likes of rump of lamb with chorizo, seared calf’s liver with smoked bacon & sage mash or smoked haddock fillet with a Welsh rarebit glaze & mustard cream sauce. As for desserts, think Cambridge burnt cream & spotted dick as well as a grown-up party confection of pink grapefruit & cucumber jelly with blood orange sorbet & popping candy.

We have lived in the area for 24 years and during this time have paid quite a number of visits to The Chequers, but always in the past, had super food and service. How things have changed! We went there to dine ten days ago and were seated in the conservatory. My starter was OK but my husband's ‘Classic Moules Mariniere’ was anything but classic and more like ‘Moules a la creme’ as it was more cream than anything else in the sauce [and my husband is on a low fat diet]. We commented about this to our waitress who checked with the kitchen and came back to say it was cooked correctly. [Not according to my husband's hotel school training and 30 plus years in the F&B industry.] We both ordered calves liver for our main course, cooked pink. When this was served, it was not pink, but too thickly cut, dark brown [obviously old], slimy and with the gristly sinews still left in it. We called our waitress to complain and said we would pay for what we had eaten and drunk and asked to see the manager.
