Square Meal Review of Bel and the Dragon ?

One of the oldest licensing houses in England – located in a converted church where pride has been taken in the restoration – the Bel and the Dragon still offers plenty of charm in its wooden floors, pine furnishings and open fires. It’s the kind of place where the ambience is ‘fun, lively & buzzy’ and you can ‘get dressed up to the nines or just as easy go in jeans’. The menu ranges from sandwiches at lunchtime to a full a la carte for dinner offering the likes of chargrilled lamb kofta kebab served with aubergine salad & mint yogurt dressing or salmon & smoked haddock fishcakes with grain mustard butter sauce. Service is keen and friendly.

A terrific venue less than an hour away from London. The new proprietors of Bel and the Dragon have done an outstanding job with this delightful pub – transforming it into a food and drink haven which you will bemost reluctant to leave once you get there. The front of the pub retains its delightful ancient charms and original character which then spill out into impressive rooms and tempting “beer garden” for al fresco delights. The lighting in the restaurant injects a light and welcoming atmosphere. The service was superb and attentive. The view of the kitchen and the tantalising roast oven and Josper grill adds to the atmosphere. Most important of all … the food … a delightful mix of fantastically priced perfectly created “new gastropub” delights – the salt lamb was succulent and to die for, the lemon sole so fresh and melted away on consumption, the brocolli with an edge of chilli – a welcome variation to the now already common roasted options. Lemon tart : ten out of ten. All in all – a MUST TRY venue!
