Square Meal Review of The Fox ?

This traditional flagstone pub, set in a picture-perfect Cotswold village, is best known for its excellent bar selection, particularly fine wines and real ales, but it serves up some pretty decent food, too. Recognisable 'modern brasserie' specials may include smoked haddock fishcakes, lamb tagine & ribeye steak with mustard butter, while the Sunday lunch menu features roast sirloin with Yorkshire pud. Friendly atmosphere and a nice garden, tucked away at the back.

Have had several meals at The Fox over the past four years and always the food and service are very good. It was busy evening, but the service was efficient and friendly and professional.

The fresh grilled sardines with garlic and herb butter were gorgeous, if not just a tad too much herb butter. The rump of lamb was pink, juicy and tender with crisp vegetables, their steak and kidney pie the best ever tasted and the desserts generous and delighftul…I had their cherry and almond tart., although wasn't expecting the cherries to have stones still in them and nearly broke a tooth…be warned! Jug of iced water placed on the table without prompting.

Disappointing that they still do not have a coffee machine and only do filter coffee. They say they are investing in one soon. Also the wine glasses set on the table are a bit utilitarian. Ok for water, but not for wine.
Although a gastro pub and the bar is shared with diners but there is always a core of locals who still pop in for a pint. Several french diners were in, so their reputation quite global for a county gastropub.

Set in a pretty village, worth a trip out for lunch and dinner, and a lovely courtyard garden to sit out when the weather is accomodating. £35 per head for 3 courses and wine. Enjoy!
