With its shop, B&B & other additions, the Star is now a fully fledged cottage industry – although the pub is still the hub, & an absolute model of its kind. The building proudly flaunts its 14th-century ancestry, the interior is warm & welcoming, the beer is beautiful, service is cheery, & the food listed on daily changing blackboards is top notch. It’s inventive stuff, to be sure, but it keeps within sensible limits – think black pudding with foie gras, risottos, slow-cooked pork belly, fish pie, & breast of local wood pigeon with a salad of pickled girolles, pancetta & roast hazelnut pesto. The Star also boasts a cracking wine list (with useful food-matching suggestions), as well as plenty of alfresco opportunities on the sheltered front terrace & in the garden.
