A country idyll located just eight miles from Sheffield’s urban sprawl, this converted Victorian vicarage is a beauty to behold, especially in summer when the wild flower meadows, gardens and hidden copses come into their own. Tessa Bramley is one of the few female British chefs to hold a Michelin star, and she can always be found in her kitchen, imparting wisdom and re-inventing the intricate seasonal specialties that she knows so well. Roast Whitby brill might appear with ginger squid, butternut squash, pomegranate and spring onions, while fillet and confit of local lamb are partnered by sautéed sweetbreads, baked Jersey royals, semi-dried cherry tomatoes, minted peas and cabbage. Desserts such as vanilla-poached rhubarb with a sorbet, jelly, malted pannacotta and toasted milk tuile also chime with the seasons, and it would be sinful to ignore the outstanding selection of unpasteurised British cheeses. The owners also run a wine business, and their cellar is a treasure trove of fine vintages from around the globe.
