Ye Olde Bell

Originally a guesthouse for the nearby 12th-century Benedictine monastery, this comfortable and welcoming inn is now part of the Dhillon hotel group, who have thankfully preserved the building's medieval charm. Menus, too, are a hint at history, with staple favourites being carefully brought up to date by a confident kitchen. Try the smoked haddock and saffron pottage to start, followed, perhaps, by seared halibut with orange and spring onion. Book well ahead to avoid disappointment, particularly in winter when open fires add a warming glow to the wood-panelled walls.
