Square Meal review of Le Monde, La Brasserie, Champers:

Not so long ago this Spanish brasserie combo had little in the way of competition in Cardiff. Things have changed, but the Parisian-style La Brasserie, the Spanish-influenced Champers (pictured), & the more formal Le Monde remain popular. Indeed, Champers has been working on its authentic atmosphere & great-value tapas menu for 34 years. The cooking is very Spanish & on a cold Cardiff night the food nurtures thoughts of escaping to the south. You can, for example, feast on spicy chorizo, garlic chicken, sardines, beef & pork albondigas (meatballs) & Serrano ham & wash it all down with splendid Spanish wines. In La Brasserie, chilled counters display bountiful selections of fish and meat, which are given simple, mostly grilled, treatment from a competent kitchen and are offered with chips or jacket potatoes and maybe a sauce. A discreet entrance leads to Le Monde, a more formal wine bar and restaurant upstairs from its breezier siblings. It’s of a similar point-to-your-dish style but specialises in a tantalising variety of very fresh fish and shellfish (though meats are also available). These days, increased expectations may leave you slightly disappointed but it’s nevertheless a reliable city centre option. There's a good range of wines, both upstairs and down, with last orders throughout at midnight.
