Square Meal Review of Stagg Inn ?

The first pub in Britain to be awarded a Michelin star back in 2001, this one-time drovers’ inn is a substantial foursquare hostelry with a cream-painted brick frontage, a bit of a garden and lovely views – all overseen by husband-and-wife team Steve and Nicola Reynolds. Local ingredients are handled with the kind of finesse you’d expect from a chef who trained at the Le Gavroche, but there’s also a refreshing lack of pimped-up trickery about Steve’s food. Starters of cured salmon with beetroot and horseradish or smoked pigeon breast with peas and lettuce could precede Herefordshire beef fillet with chips and wild garlic butter or sea bass fillet with pickle cucumber, samphire and ash potatoes. The regional cheese list is unmissable, Nicola’s personally chosen wine list is a “fairly priced” cracker, and there’s no intrusive music to ruin the atmosphere.
