Fenland at its most atmospheric can be enjoyed in this isolated pub with rooms by the side of the New Bedford River, a favourite among green-wellied dog walkers. Real ale & log fires complete the atmospheric backdrop to amazingly good food based on the best produce available: loin of Denham Estate venison, for example, may be a tad expensive but the kitchen certainly knows what to do with it, teaming it with celeriac & chestnut gateau, braised red cabbage & creme de Cassis jus. Starters include rillettes of Bottisham smoked eel with Melba toast, yoghurt & piccalilli, while noteworthy old-fashioned desserts might run to sticky figgy pudding with rum & raisin ice cream. Good wines too.
