Square Meal Review of Isla's Conservatory at The George Hotel ?

Glorious views of the local harbour and access to England’s longest wooden pier are just two of the assets at this enviably situated waterside hotel – formerly owned by Dire Straits bass player John Isley but now in the hands of Dianne Thompson CBE (group CEO at Camelot). There have also been changes in the kitchen with the arrival of Robert Thompson (no relation), who earned a Michelin star while cooking at The Hambrough in Ventnor. What was the hotel’s brasserie has been re-branded as Isla’s Conservatory – an all-day eatery offering breakfast, afternoon bites, kids’ deals and a freewheeling menu of Anglo-European dishes. Nibble on small plates of grilled mackerel escabèche before tackling roast beetroot and artichoke salad, a bowl of bouillabaisse or char-grilled rump of lamb with Casteluccio lentils and salsa verde. For afters, perhaps try polenta cake with dulce de leche ice cream.
